The Mazovia Polish Song and Dance Association is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta. Established in 2015, the group is dedicated to promoting Polish folk culture through vibrant dances, passionate songs, and captivating performances. Led by Artistic Director and Choreographer Majka Kowalczyk, Mazovia draws its name from the historical region of Mazowsze, located in mid-northeastern Poland along the picturesque Vistula River and known for its stunning architecture and as the home of Warsaw, the capital city of Poland.
Mazovia's young and friendly individuals aged 7-18, take immense pride in their heritage and strive to preserve the richness of Polish traditions.
The group had the privilege of performing at prestigious events such as the annual Polish Festivals in San Francisco and Seattle, where we were invited by the Polish American Congress and the Seattle Polish Foundation in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, we enthralled audiences at the International Folklore Festival in Poland called "Podlaskie Spotkanie." Additionally, Mazovia showcased their talent at the Texan Folklife Festival in San Antonio, Texas, in June 2019. In 2023 we travelled to Austria and participated in the International Folklore Festival in Montenegro, alongside attending a professional dance workshop in Koszecin, Poland.
The group's extensive repertoire features a diverse selection of national and regional Polish dances, characterized by dynamic steps and sung in the original language. A distinguishing feature of Mazovia's performances is their meticulously crafted and vibrantly colored costumes, which are imported from Poland. These costumes not only enhance the visual appeal of their productions but also play a significant role in capturing the essence of each dance.
Mazovia's performances have allowed its dancers to forge connections and foster friendships with people from all around the world. They are warmly welcomed wherever they go, and their presentations are met with resounding applause. Through their commitment to preserving Polish traditions and sharing them with others, Mazovia continues to bring the rich heritage of Poland to life on stage.
